Singapore – Raffles Singapore’s Graphic Designer, Tay Hui Jie, was one of the finalists for the Space Nurtures Competition. The task was to conceptualise a repeated graphical pattern contextualised in modern day Singapore that is in the spirit of Vitra’s most illustrious designers – Charles & Ray Eames, Verner Panton or Alexander Girard.

Organised by Space Furniture and Vitra with support from the DesignSingapore Council, the competition selects potential students through a design competition and then expose them to the multi-faceted world of design at an international level. It also equips budding design students with desirable skills to grow into commercially-viable designers of tomorrow.

20 finalists were selected during the preliminary round which they were required to produce actual design prototypes in the final phase. The primary application of the pattern was a fabric cushion cover. Designers were also required to display the versatility of their pattern by conceptualising an accessory of their choice as an extension of their collections.

Hui Jie used owls to represent the vibrant nightlife in Singapore. The pattern was combined with elements of local softscape and hardscape, instilling a right balance in the design. It not only portrays the beauty of urban greenery, but it also captures the diversity cultures of Singapore. “Through this competition, I have learnt to be independent, curious and adventurous. Dare to fail, endure through it and you may succeed.” said Hui Jie.
