Raffles American School

K12 Overview

Raffles American School offers a rigorous educational program, which follows a U.S. standards-referenced curriculum model. RAS Curriculum provides a strong foundation in language arts, mathematics, social studies and science. Art, Music, World Language and Physical Education are valued subject areas for students to explore their inner self and learn multiple methods of expression while demonstrating the RAS Learner Outcomes. All subjects with the exception of World Languages are instructed in English. Raffles American School is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, USA (WASC).

The Fundamental idea behind American education is the concept of educating the whole child for the successful realization of dreams and goals. The idea of a school environment where success for all children is actualized is a humbling challenge. We have been given the opportunity to develop not only a physical plant that in and of itself can be a laboratory for student learning, but the opportunity to develop a curriculum based on what we truly believe all students should know able to do, now and into the future. We have the opportunity and challenge to embed learning outcomes such as communication skills, organizational and research skills, and problem solving / thinking skills into our curriculum at every level. We have the opportunity to model, and consequently, to give students the chance to grow in compassion, responsibility, integrity, and respect. Our faculty will be tasked to use formative and summative assessment techniques to have students demonstrate these attributes in meaningful ways so that students are able to apply, synthesize, and create in the real world. We hope to inspire students to pursue their passions and their dreams through a multiple intelligence approach to teaching and learning, and our efforts will encompass the curricular and co-curricular domains.

About RAS

RAS was envisioned by Raffles Education Corporation (REC) of Singapore back in 2010. Since that time RAS has progressed from a vision, to a full working plan. In 2011, REC contracted International School Services (ISS) out of Princeton, New Jersey to provide the American curriculum, instructional materials and overseas staff for the creation of RAS. Together with REC, ISS recruited Dr. Rob to be the founding Superintendent of RAS. With more than 20 years of overseas school experience Dr. Rob joined the RAS team in late 2011. Immediately upon arrival to Malaysia Dr. Rob began the recruitment process that ultimately culminated in the hiring of our current 6 overseas faculty and our admissions coordinator, Mrs. Kerstin Mockrish. RAS currently employs 17 overseas faculty in 2014-2015 School Year.

The next step toward creating RAS required the rental of a facility that could serve as a temporary campus while the final steps in procuring the 46 acre site, which is to be the home of RAS just outside of Educity, Iskandar, Johor, continued. In early 2012 an empty section of the Anjung Neighborhood Center in Johor (Nusajaya) was determined to be the optimal location for establishing RAS in the short term. Following detailed renovations and a shipment of instructional materials from the USA, RAS opened its doors in August 2012 to a small group of eager students. The August 2013 opening hosted a much larger group of eager students as RAS continues to provide rigorous education with the student at the center of learning.

RAS will continue to operate in Anjung Center, Johor for the remainder of the 2014-15 School Year and the opening of the 2015-16 School Year. Movement to the first phase of the RAS Main Campus will be in January 2016. In August 2016,the RAS Main Campus is targeted to open at full completion, to include Boarding Facilities.

The Master Plan for Raffles American School, Johor outlines the vision for a contemporary Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 academy that will be unlike any that has preceded it in the region. Set amongst the lush rolling hills of Iskandar, Malaysia in Johor, the school is envisioned as a holistic learning environment where educational facilities, and athletic and performing arts spaces will comprise an open network that is seamlessly interwoven into the beautiful outdoor landscape.
